On March 25 1947 the test match between New Zealand and England played at Lancaster Park in Christchurch officially ended. The match brought to an end the test career of one of England’s greatest ever batsmen, Wally Hammond. In his final innings he scored 79 runs as shown in this National Film unit clip. The match was badly affected by rain and no play took place after day 2. Hammond retired having scored over 7,000 runs and an average of 58.45. His England record for most test centuries (22 centuries) stood until Alistair Cook surpassed that number in 2012.
The film footage shown here is from the National Film Unit newsreel Weekly Review 294. The National Film Unit was established to publicise New Zealand's participation and achievements during the Second World War. After 1945 the Film Unit expanded from producing weekly newsreels to making documentaries and films to the order of Government Departments. During its existence the Film Unit produced films for national organisations as well as many films on its own initiative.
