SOFIA flew two classroom educators as part of its Airborne Astronomy Ambassador Program. After a rigorous application and training process, they flew on board a Basic Science Flight and are bringing their experience, and SOFIA science, into their classrooms and communities.

SOFIA flew the night of March 8, 2014 with the FIFI-LS instrument on the telescope for the first time. FIFI-LS is the Field Imaging Far-Infrared Line Spectrometer. More info on the instrument at: http://go.nasa.gov/1eWwHqP

Time-lapse video of SOFIA's third month of maintenance (September 2014) at the Lufthansa Technik facility in Hamburg, Germany. In September, Lufthansa Technik engineers continued inspection of the aircraft including maintenance on the engine pylons and re-installation of the displays in the on-board consoles, while staff from the University of Stuttgart's German SOFIA Institute continued maintenance on the telescope assembly. SOFIA will complete its heavy maintenance period in November, and will resume science flights in early December 2014.

SOFIA Chief Pilot Troy Asher discusses staff management during the observatory's Southern Hemisphere deployment July 12- Aug 2, 2013. The staff worked together to successfully fly 9 flights (three flights each week, for three weeks) from Christchurch, New Zealand.

SOFIA flew during the night of January 30-31, 2014 with the GREAT Instrument (German Receiver for Astronomy at Terahertz Frequencies). This video shows where SOFIA flew to conduct astronomical observations.

SOFIA's first month at the Lufthansa Technik facility in Hamburg, Germany.
On June 28, SOFIA departed from its home base at the Armstrong Flight Research Center in Palmdale, California-facility for a trans-Atlantic flight to Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg. There, engineers from the German airline performed a decadal inspection to ensure SOFIA will operate safely for years to come
